Animator Reviews

Lotte Reiniger:

Lotte Reiniger uses paper rigs and a light box to create animations with the silhouettes of characters from behind a sheet of paper. Using pins to piece together limbs to body parts as though using the 'bone tool' in Adobe Animate. The same goes for the background of her animation, its all just layered pieces of paper. Then by using a stop motion camera she is able to move her characters and create a fluid animation, layering the pieces of paper effectively in order to make particular parts of the animation darker than other parts giving a sense of perspective.

Don Hertzfeldt:

Don animates his work in software, drawing frame by frame. With his simple black lined characters, occasionally bringing colour into the frames and sometimes using visual effects draw on paper. He also seems to use a lot of boiling in his work, tracing the same frame several times, making it seem like characters are moving or are alive, despite standing still or doing nothing.
